Fixing Your Leaking Roof In Kitchener

Aug 27, 2015

What can cause a leaking roof in Kitchener? Roofs are built to last a long time if you properly maintain them, but they can develop problems that cause them to leak if they are not maintained. There are a myriad of issues that can cause your roof to leak. A good roofing contractor can help you prevent these issues and prolong the life of your roof.

Shingle Problems That Can Cause A Leaking Roof In Kitchener

Roofing problems necessitate costly repairs, so learn to recognize the signs that your roof needs attention and do not put off regular maintenance. A residential roof may have a 20-year lifespan, but to achieve it, you must attend to problems along the way. Some problems that specifically attack shingles:

  • Shingles are meant to lie flat on your roof; when they curl up, they are in a position to blow off or sustain water damage. Moisture buildup in the attic damages the underside of the shingle, which leads to curling.
  • Missing shingles. As a result of high winds, shingles can blow off of your home and allow moisture to attack exposed roofing materials. Shingles that are old, weak, or deteriorated are subject to wind damage. Curling and buckling can exacerbate the problem, as well.
  • Cracked Or Broken Shingles. Over time, shingle materials deteriorate and develop fine cracks, breaks, and tears. Many of these problems can be repaired with roofing sealant for a time to prevent further breakdown.
  • Often as a result of poor attic ventilation, the roof deck and the plywood base of your roof can shift. This can distort the shingles and move them out of line, so that they flap in the breeze and can potentially blow off.

 Flashing Problems And Leaks

Many leaks are not the result of shingle issues, but the result of problems beneath the surface or around flashing:

  • Rusted Flashing. Flashing around pipes, chimneys, roof angles, or anything else that disrupts the flat surface of the roof can loosen or deteriorate. This can cause cracks that allow water to seep in.
  • Step Flashing. Where the roof intersects with sidewalls, short sections of flashing direct the water back to the shingles. If the pieces rust or come loose, water can leak into the house.
  • Small Holes. If tree limbs or debris pierce your roof, or if you have small holes from items mounted on your roof, such as antennas or satellite dishes, over time these holes become conduits for water to reach the surface below.
  • Dormers And Windows. The trim around dormers and windows can deteriorate or loosen, especially if the caulk holding them in place breaks down. This can allow water to enter through those weakened seams.
