Install A Quality Asphalt Roof In Kitchener-Waterloo

Aug 31, 2015

When you buy an asphalt roof in Kitchener-Waterloo, you are investing in the most popular roofing material in North America. Asphalt roofing became popular in the early 20th century, because it is economical and easy to install. Continuous improvements have been made to this popular roofing material, which is why it remains the number one roofing choice.

Two Types Of Asphalt Shingles
There are two basic types of asphalt shingles: organic and fiberglass.

  • Organic Shingles
Organic shingles consist of asphalt embedded into an organic material such as wood fiber, cellulose, paper, or other materials. They contain 40% more asphalt per square than their fiberglass cousins. Although this is no longer permitted, early versions of organic shingles contained asbestos. Very durable and hard to tear, they are less brittle than fiberglass products, but also more flammable. They have a Class B fire rating.
  • Fiberglass Shingles
Fiberglass shingles use a base, ormat, made of strands of glass fibers, better known as fiberglass. The fiberglass matis then bonded with urea formaldehyde resin and coated with asphalt to make the product waterproof. Since these shingles are Class A fire-rated and free of asbestos, they have largely replaced organic shingles.

All shingles are coated withmineral granules on their topside. These granules are made of quartz, vitrified brick, stone, slate, schist, or ceramic. The granulesare weather resistant, block ultraviolet light, protect the asphalt, and give color to the product. On the back, mica, talc, or sand prevent the shingles from sticking to each other before their application. They may even have additional materials added to make them more durable, heat-resistant and to prevent algae growth. Most also have strips to make them wind-resistant. Wind resistance is a concern in many climates, but especially in areas prone to hurricanes.

Choices For Your Asphalt Roof In Kitchener-Waterloo

Asphalt shingles are sold in three major forms in the marketplace.

  • Strip Asphalt Roofing Shingles. Built on a durable fiberglass base, these shingles are in a strip for easy instalation. They are often wind and tear resistant. Because of their low cost and easy installation, they are often used in economy-priced homes or as a replacement in homes with existing strip shingles.
  • Dimensional Asphalt Roofing Shingles. Because of its multilayered construction, this type of shingle offers a richer, more multidimensional appearance than strip shingles. The increased strength of dimensional shingles also increases their resistance to tearing and being blown off in windy conditions. However, because of the distinctive layering of this type of roof, they are often heavier than strip asphalt roofs, and therefore may have a more comprehensive warrantee.
  • Premium Asphalt Roofing Shingles. Many roofing companies offer lines of laminated shingles with an improved asphalt base and aesthetic qualities that make them look like slate or shake. They may have increased impact resistance or solar reflectivity, whichmay make them more durable and more energy-efficient. However, the main difference is the aesthetic appeal of these premium shingles.
